Good news for Kent Special Education Needs

I was delighted to accept an invitation to the opening of the Laural Centre, an SEN Unit  for children on the Autistic Spectrum, attached to The North School in Ashford. This is the first Unit to be opened since the reversal of county policy two years ago that sought to phase out all SEN units in the county. The Centre was opened by Paul Carter, Leader of KCC, who has been a strong champion of SEN Units and Special Schools in Kent........

This was in the face of government policy over many years to remove such provision in favour of more integration into mainstream schools. Units such as the Laurel Centre offer the best of both worlds and I was delighted to talk with children who benefited from special attention in the Unit and also from  joining in mainstream classes at The North School. Headteacher Lesley Ellis was keen to emphasise, in discussion with me,  that the Unit (or Centre as she prefers to call it) is cited at the heart of the school, and it is clear that secondary students with with significant ASD in the Ashford area will benefit greatly from the expertise being developed at the school.

I look forward to further Units being opened where appropriate. You will find more information on SEN Units here
